Unshot

Last updated: September 16, 2026

Introduction

Unshot helps you clear the screenshots piling up on your iPhone. It reads them, shows them to you a few at a time, and deletes only the ones you decide to delete.

Screenshots are unusually personal. They can contain messages, bank details, tickets, medical results and addresses. Unshot is built so that none of that ever leaves your device, and this policy explains exactly what happens to it.

The short version

  • Unshot collects nothing about you and sends nothing to us.
  • Your screenshots are never copied, uploaded or backed up by Unshot.
  • Everything Unshot reads from a screenshot is processed on your device. The only thing kept is a search index that cannot reproduce the text.
  • Nothing is ever deleted from Photos without you confirming it twice.
  • There are no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind.

Access to Photos

Unshot asks for access to your photo library so it can find the screenshots already on your iPhone. It asks for read and write access because deleting a screenshot you have chosen to delete requires write access. There is no read-only permission that would allow it.

Unshot only ever looks at images iOS has marked as screenshots. Your other photos and videos are not read, listed or analysed.

If you grant limited access instead of full access, Unshot works only with the screenshots you selected, and says so on screen rather than pretending the rest do not exist.

What stays on your device

Unshot keeps a small record on your device so it does not show you the same screenshot twice, and so your reminders survive closing the app. That record contains only:

  • The identifier iOS assigns to a screenshot, and whether you kept it, queued it for deletion, or have not decided yet
  • The date a screenshot was taken
  • Any reminder you created: its time, the note you typed, and which screenshot it points at
  • A search index: for each screenshot, a set of scrambled numeric keys derived from the words Unshot read in it, protected by a secret kept in your iPhone’s Keychain. The keys cannot be turned back into words. See “Searching your screenshots” below.

What Unshot never stores

  • A copy of any screenshot, at any size, anywhere
  • Text, codes or links read out of a screenshot
  • Your name, email address, phone number or account of any kind
  • Usage data, event logs, crash payloads or analytics
  • Device identifiers, advertising identifiers or location data
  • Anything at all on a server belonging to Moby

Reading text and codes from a screenshot

When you swipe up on a screenshot, Unshot looks for links, text and QR or barcodes inside it so it can offer to open, copy or share them. This uses the text recognition built into iOS and happens entirely on your device.

The result is held in memory only for as long as that screenshot is in front of you, and is discarded when you move on. It is never written to disk, never included in a reminder, and never transmitted anywhere.

On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Unshot can also ask Apple’s on-device model to tidy that text so it is easier to read. This happens entirely on your device: nothing is sent to Apple, to Moby or to anyone else, the original text stays one tap away, and the tidied text is discarded in exactly the same way.

Searching your screenshots

Search finds screenshots by the text inside them. To answer quickly, Unshot reads each screenshot once, on your device, and keeps a small index: not the text, but a set of scrambled numeric keys derived from each word, protected by a secret that lives in your iPhone’s Keychain and nowhere else. Without that secret a key is just a number, and even with it the words cannot be reconstructed.

The index stays on your device, is never uploaded or backed up by Unshot, and drops a screenshot’s entry when the screenshot is gone. If a screenshot is only in iCloud, Unshot reads the smaller copy your iPhone keeps and downloads the full version only when you ask it to.

Deleting screenshots

Swiping left does not delete anything. It adds the screenshot to a queue that you can review and change at any time, and removing something from that queue is always possible before you confirm.

When you confirm, iOS presents its own separate confirmation before anything is removed. Deleted screenshots go to Recently Deleted in Photos, where they remain recoverable for 30 days under Apple’s normal behaviour. Unshot cannot bypass either of these steps, and does not try to.

Your permission to delete is asked for each time you confirm a batch. It is never remembered between launches.

Reminders and notifications

If you ask Unshot to remind you about a screenshot, it schedules a local notification on your device. Local means exactly that: the alert is created and delivered by your iPhone, and no reminder ever reaches a server.

The notification deliberately says nothing about the screenshot or the note you wrote. Anyone glancing at your lock screen sees only that a reminder is due, never what it is about.

Opening links

A link found in a screenshot opens in a browser view inside Unshot. That view keeps no cookies, cache or history between sessions, and only ever opens ordinary web addresses.

Once a page loads, you are on someone else’s website, and their privacy policy applies to what happens there. Moby has no involvement in and no visibility into that.

iCloud Photos

If your library uses iCloud Photos, a screenshot may need downloading from Apple before Unshot can show it. That transfer is between your iPhone and your own iCloud account, handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. Moby is not a party to it and receives nothing from it.

Purchases and subscriptions

Unshot Pro is available as a weekly or yearly auto-renewing subscription, or as a one-time lifetime purchase. The yearly plan starts with a free trial; if you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription begins and Apple charges the price shown on the purchase screen. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled, and you can cancel at any time in your Apple ID settings.

Payment is handled entirely by Apple. Moby never sees your card details, your Apple ID, or your billing address.

To check whether your purchase or subscription is active, Unshot uses RevenueCat. RevenueCat processes an anonymous identifier generated on your device and the receipt Apple issues. It is not linked to your name or email, and no information about your screenshots, reminders, or activity in the app is ever sent to RevenueCat or to anyone else.

You do not need an account to buy, subscribe, or restore a purchase.

Children

Unshot is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.

Changes to This Policy

If our data practices change, we will update this policy and note it in the App Store update notes. The commitment not to collect your data, and not to let your screenshots leave your device, is the point of the app rather than a temporary position.
